The innovators Yossi Shiri and Alex Ackerman of the Israeli company Road-Guard were the winners of the regional prize for Bavaria in Germany, in the European Satellite Navigation Competition 2008, and were the first runner-up candidates for the overall Galileo Masters prize in the competition, among 293 international contestants. Their winning idea is the novel GreenDrive system, a driver-vehicle application that guides drivers develop smart, smooth, and safe driving techniques that lead to an average fuel savings of 15-25% while contributing to environmental protection. GreenDrive’s purpose is to minimize fuel consumption by suggesting the most economical driving speed to the driver along the way. Here is seen at the award ceremony (from left) Thorsten Rudolph (Director of Anwendungszentrum GmbH in Oberpfaffenhofen and the instigator of European Satellite Navigation Competition), Ulrike Daniels (Project Managements, Anwendungszentrum GmbH), Prof Dr Johann-Dietrich Wörner (Chairman of the Executive Board, German Aerospace Center DLR), Emilia Müller (Bavarian Minister for Economics), Alex Ackerman (Chief Executive Officer of Road-Guard), Yossi Shiri (Road-Guard co-founder and Vice President for Business Development), and Rainer Grohe (former Executive Director, Galileo Joint Undertaking). 21 October 2008, Munich, Germany.

Galileo’s new technology will revolutionise our transport systems, increasing safety and improving efficiency; this will make for better quality of life and less pollution in our cities. Galileo will also bring benefits in other aspects of everyday life, with precision farming raising yields, improved information for emergency services speeding up response times, and more reliable and accurate time signals underpinning our most vital computer and communications networks.
