First long-duration mission for an ESA astronaut onboard the ISS


Thomas Reiter
 
Thomas Reiter was born on 23 May 1958 in Frankfurt, Germany. He has flown in space twice, on Euromir 95/Soyuz TM-22 and STS-121/Astrolab. In October 2007, Reiter left the European Astronaut Corps to take on a new role on the Executive Board of the German Space Agency (DLR) with responsibility for space.

Columbus Control Centre
 
Columbus Control Centre in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany.

On 19 October 2004 ESA and DLR officially inaugurated the Columbus Control Centre. The Centre has been set up under ESA contract in Oberpfaffenhofen at the premises of DLR. The Columbus Control Centre is now ready to take up operations of the European elements of the International Space Station (ISS).

On the ESA/Russian Euromir 95 mission to the Mir space station, Reiter was assigned as flight engineer for the record-breaking 179-day mission (3 Sept 1995 to 29 Feb 1996) along with Russian colleagues Yuri Gidzenko and Sergei Avdeev.
