Hans Schlegel

Family: married and has seven children
Hobbies: skiing, scuba diving and flying. He also enjoys reading and being a handyman.
Hans received a Masters in Physics from the University of Aachen, Germany in 1979. He performed Basic Astronaut Training at the German Aerospace Research Establishment (DLR). He became a certified research diver and holds a Private Pilot’s license.

In 1998 he joined the European Astronaut Corps of the European Space Agency.

Hans worked as a Payload Specialist on STS-55 aboard Space Shuttle Columbia. Nearly 90 experiments were done during this mission to investigate life sciences, material sciences, physics, robotics, astronomy, and the Earth and its atmosphere.

In July 2006 Hans was assigned to the STS-122 mission that delivered the European Space Agency’s Columbus Laboratory to the ISS. During his second spaceflight, he performed one spacewalk of nearly 7 hours to help prepare the Columbus laboratory for its scientific work.

In total, Hans has spent 22 days, 18 hours and 2 minutes in space!
