Toulouse bus test-drives European satellite navigation

14 February 2003

Satellite navigation for buses
EGNOS (the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service) could be used in future bus fleet management applications. Possible benefits of the system include safer driving through bad weather, tracking the entire bus fleet at once, constant analysis of evolving traffic patterns, plus up-to-the-second details of service delays for passengers awaiting their ride.

PDA used on the bus
The Windows CE.net PDA which provides the satellite navigation information is attached to a GPS antenna located on the bus roof. An integrated wireless GSM connection providing SISNeT access to EGNOS enables the PDA to provide more precise navigation information than that achieved via the GPS antenna alone.
