ESA astronat Jean-Pierre Haignere blasted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on February 20th, 1999, bound for a six month stay aboard the Russian space station Mir. This mission, named Perseus, is the fifth French-Russian mission to date.
Along with Russian commander Viktor Afanassiev and Slovak Ivan Bella, Haignere was carried into space in a Soyuz capsule onboard a Salyut launcher. Onboard Mir, Haignere will carry out European experiments in microgravity, two of which have been developed by ESA.
