TEXT Welcome to Kiruna, in the north of Sweden. Here, in a hanger deep in the arctic woods, students from across Europe are performing the last tests before launching their experiments on high altitude balloons.
This annual project, known as BEXUS, is one of the many educational programmes backed by the European Space Agency, and the Swedish and German agencies in this case, to get young Europeans interested in space.

Bexus is an excellent opportunity for university students. It really offers them, within a short space of time, a complete activity. So they can have an idea, they design the experiment, build it, test it, then they get to see it fly, they get it back, they can analyse the results, and write a report, its the full package. And it's just what a scientist or engineer might do in their real career.
