Best of 2001

28 December 2001
Looking back, 2001 was an eventful year in space. In 2001 the first European man and woman - ESA astronauts Umberto Guidoni and Claudie Haigneré - visited the International Space Station; in July the ESA telecommuncations satellite Artemis was launched; and by November, for the first time laser was being used to transfer data between satellites.

Old ‘friends’ such as the ESA/NASA Hubble telescope, which is now in its 11th year, continued to provide incredible images of the universe and the six-year-old ESA/NASA solar observatory SOHO, presented astronomers with revelations on the Sun and its atmosphere. In March, space enthusiasts all over the world sadly said goodbye to Mir, the Russian space station which during its extraordinary and eventful 15 years in space also hosted European astronauts.

Enjoy some of the highlights of 2001 in streaming video. Happy New Year to all our visitors.
