Astronaut's foot and footprint in lunar soil
A lasting impression
The future of human spaceflight

Speculations about long-range missions by astronauts concern mainly a return to the Moon around 2010 and a manned visit to Mars around 2020. None of the world’s space agencies has made any such commitment yet.

ESA’s present policy is to keep Europe’s options open, with an active programme of human spaceflight on the International Space Station, and with a watching brief on new methods of space propulsion that may make manned voyages easier.

Much thought has also gone into the benefits of installing a scientific base on the Moon, but the relative advantages of astronauts versus robots are still debated.
