4 June 2002 Galileo, Europe’s own global navigation satellite system, undertaken by the European Space Agency and the European Commission, will provide unparalleled accuracy and dependability in global positioning. Work has started on the main activities leading to a key milestone in making Galileo a reality. Galileo Design Review, a milestone in making Galileo a reality This month, work intensifies on the main activities leading to a key milestone called the “Preliminary System Design Review” (PSDR). The in-depth preparatory work for this event was kicked off on 26 May 2002 at ESA's technical centre in Noordwijk, the Netherlands and will last until 9 July 2002 when the Review Board will meet.
This review calls for the scrutiny of all system aspects of the Galileo system design keeping in mind how Galileo will be used. Some likely applications of Galileo will be in running trains, guiding cars and landing aircraft. A number of specialized panels composed of European experts in fields such as space and ground segments have been chosen to carry out the review.
This milestone will conclude eight months of intensive work in the European Space Agency and European industry on the design of the Galileo system.
The ultimate goal of the review is to ensure the completeness, adequacy and effectiveness of the project elaborated under the leadership of Galileo Industries. Successful completion of the review will be an important step in the implementation of the Galileo programme, a programme conceived for the benefit of everyone in the world, Europeans in particular. | |
