When the first ATV, called Jules Verne, is launched in to orbit in 2008, and navigates autonomously towards the Station, a two-way proximity communication radio link will be established between the ISS and ATV at a distance of between 30 and 100 kilometres, just prior the rendezvous operations. Two dedicated antennas on the outside of the ISS will be used to establish the communication link.
