The SysNova initiative is a space systems assessment scheme using 'technology challenges' and competition to survey a comparatively large number of alternative solutions. It acknowledges the critical role of joint studies by academic and industrial institutions across ESA Member States in the exploratory phase of new topics.
This competition gives industry and universities the opportunity to work and develop their solutions together in a field that is the cutting edge of technology. Every year a few topics of relevance to the exploration of potential technology needs beyond current ESA programmes.
SysNova challenges can lead to inflight opportunities and fully fledged missions.
SysNova is implemented in the frame of ESA’s Preparation Element of the agency’s Basic Activities, which has various links with all of ESA’s programmes. The Preparation Element’s main role is to carry out preparatory analyses, laying the groundwork for the Agency’s future activities and missions. The assessment studies undertaken by the Preparation Element provide ESA and its Member States with the necessary information on which to base their decisions about the implementation of new programmes and the future direction of space activities.
