NASA astronauts Andre Douglas and Kate Rubins simulate a moonwalk in May 2024 carrying NASA's Handheld Universal Lunar Camera (HULC), a camera that astronauts will use during the Artemis III mission.
Andre and Kate took part in the fifth Joint Extravehicular Activity and Human Surface Mobility Program Test Team (JETT) wearing mockup spacesuits and completing Artemis-related science activities while traversing through the Arizona desert. Similar to the Apollo era, these tests are conducted in Arizona due to its lunar-like terrain including craters, faults and volcanic features.
JETT 5 was a fully integrated Artemis III mission with simulated moonwalks, advanced technology runs, a science evaluation room, and a flight control team.
Kate Rubins took part in ESA's PANGAEA geology training course in 2021. Learn more about her geology adventure on the PANGAEA blog.
