The Copernicus Sentinel-4 mission is carried on the Meteosat Third Generation Sounder (MTG-S) satellites. From geostationary orbit, 36 000 km above the equator, Sentinel-4 has a permanent eye on the atmosphere over Europe and a part of north Africa. Sentinel-4 is an ultraviolet, visible, near-infrared light spectrometer that delivers high-resolution data on a wide range of atmospheric trace gases and pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide, ozone, sulphur dioxide and formaldehyde for air-quality forecasts.
