Polarised view of aerosols from MetOp-SG’s 3MI instrument

This first image captured on 28 August 2025 by MetOp-SG’s 3MI instrument shows aerosols over Northern Africa, Italy and the eastern Mediterranean. This view based on polarised light measurements reveals detail of the atmosphere’s composition – such as subtle cloud structures over Italy and wildfire smoke on the left edge of the image, near Greece.
