ARISS – Amateur Radio on the ISS

Day 064, orbit 0994 — World Amateur Radio Day is a great opportunity to shine a spotlight on the educational programme ARISS – Amateur Radio on the International Space Station. Since the very first ISS expedition in 2000, astronauts aboard the Station have been speaking live with radio amateurs on Earth. To date, ARISS has enabled more than 1,800 contacts between astronauts and schools in over 100 countries!

Between 60 and 100 contacts are scheduled each year – including six with French schools in 2026. For astronauts, every exchange is like opening a window onto Earth, with voices and accents that break up the routine of operational communications. Since the start of the εpsilon  mission, I’ve had the chance to talk with young people in Brazil, the United States, Luxembourg, Italy, and France.

Radio waves make a fantastic educational tool, adaptable to all kinds of learning levels. They offer a very hands‑on way to explore physics and help spark curiosity about engineering and science!

A huge thank‑you to the ARISS teams and to all the radio amateurs who make these contacts possible. ARISS is a powerful source of inspiration: it creates a direct link between young people and astronauts, turning space exploration into a personal and memorable experience.

Jour 064, orbite 0994 – À l’occasion de la Journée mondiale des radio amateurs, coup de projecteur sur le programme éducatif ARISS (Amateur Radio on the International Space Station). Depuis la toute première expédition, en l’an 2000, des astronautes en mission à bord de la Station échangent en direct avec des radio amateurs sur Terre. À ce jour, ARISS a permis d’organiser plus de 1800 contacts entre un astronaute et un établissement scolaire, dans plus de 100 pays ! 

Entre 60 et 100 contacts sont programmés chaque année – dont 6 avec des établissements français en 2026. Pour l’astronaute, chaque contact est comme une fenêtre ouverte sur la Terre, avec des voix et des accents qui rompent avec la routine des communications opérationnelles. Depuis le début d’εpsilon, j’ai échangé avec des jeunes au Brésil, aux États-Unis, au Luxembourg, en Italie et en France !  

Les ondes radio sont un excellent support pédagogique, adaptable selon les niveaux : elles permettent d’aborder la physique de manière concrète… et de susciter de l’intérêt pour l’ingénierie et les sciences !  

Un immense merci aux équipes ARISS et à l’ensemble des radioamateurs qui rendent ces contacts possibles. ARISS est un bel outil d’inspiration  qui crée un lien direct entre les jeunes et les astronautes, et transforme l’exploration spatiale en une expérience personnelle et marquante.
