As big as a football pitch and weighing 400 tonnes, it will circle the earth 16 times a day. Special windows give the astronauts a view of 85 per cent of the Earth's surface.Permanent access to the unique environment of space is pushing back the frontiers of science and research. By eliminating the effects of gravity, scientists can build a better understanding of the physical forces on Earth - even the workings of the human brain.Man has long dreamed of building a permanent station in space, but for years space programmes developed separately, in competition with one another. The International Space Station was borne of a realisation that only international partnership could make the dream a reality. The ISS combines technical experience gained through the American Space Shuttle programme, the Mir S
