In this project, Wageningen University & Research developed a method to estimate floating macroplastic accumulation and transport rates in rivers using remote sensing. The team combined the detection of floating water hyacinths using the Copernicus Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 satellites with in-situ estimates of macroplastic densities carried by this invasive aquatic weed. Water hyacinths typically form large patches several hundred metres wide and long, and can thus be detected from space. Find out more here.
The project was funded through the Discovery element of ESA’s Basic Activities. It was selected through an Open Space Innovation Platform (OSIP) call for ideas on remote sensing of plastic marine litter.
