EGNOS: Europe’s first venture in satellite navigation

EGNOS, the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service, is Europe’s first venture into satellite navigation.

EGNOS augments the US Global Positioning System (GPS) and makes it suitable for safety-critical applications such as flying aircraft or navigating ships through narrow channels.

Consisting of three geostationary satellites and a network of ground stations, EGNOS achieves its aim by transmitting a signal containing information on the reliability and accuracy of the positioning signals sent out by GPS. It allows users in Europe and beyond to determine their position to within 1.5 metres.

EGNOS offers three basic services:

  • Open Service: positioning data are freely available to anyone in Europe equipped with an EGNOS-enabled GPS receiver
  • EGNOS Data Access Service (EDAS), offered on a controlled access basis (e.g. through Internet or mobile phones) to customers who require enhanced performance for professional use
  • Safety of Life Service, for safety-critical transport applications, namely in civil aviation - this service provides enhanced and guaranteed performance and features an integrity warning system. The ‘Safety of Life Service’ for Aviation was declared in March 2011. The ‘Commercial Service’ will be declared when available.
