1998 saw central America devasted by the effects of Mitch, the most deadly hurricane in two centuries. The disaster claimed 11,000 lives in Honduras and Nicaragua. Such damage could be limited in the future by the intruduction of early-warning systems, such as those proposed by ESA's Living Planet programme.
