      19-30 April 2004 saw an eleven-day mission of ESA astronaut Andr? Kuipers to the International Space Station. This transmission is the first in a series of four review programmes with the best images from this mission. Part One focuses on the training for the mission, and includes many unseen images from Russian ISS training, notably from parabolic flights ans survival training in hostile conditions.
      The programme includes an A-roll of 10 minutes (split audio - English voiceover) with clean international sound.

      Star City lies outside Moscow. ItÕs the training centre for the cosmonauts. Winter lasts
      six months here. Even in winter, I liked to ride my bike to the training centre. We had
      training every day. There were theoretical subjects, of course, but we also learned
      other things, such as languages. Teaching was one-on-one. And Russian is important,
      obviously, because everything is done in Russian. We used interpreters during the
      courses, but once youÕre in the Soyuz, you have to be able to understand the
      commander and the ground staff. The training sessions in the Soyuz capsule were also
      very important. The Soyuz TMA is the latest version of the Soyuz capsules, with
      room for tall people, lik e me. And naturally, after the theory courses, we did a great
      deal of training, in these trainers. They are very realistic. These trainers are really very
