    • Description

Monitoring the atmospohere has become an international priority . At the Dutch Met Office (KNMI) instruments from several satellites are used to follow the evolution of ozone around the planet.
Ozone comes in two flavours. One the one hand, in stratosphere, natural ozone provides a protective layer, absorbing harmful ultra violet radiation. This ""good"" ozone protect us from sunburn , skin cancer and eye problems.
On the other hand, under the influece of sunlight, notrogen oides and hydrocarbons create toxic owone on Earth's surface. THis bad ozone, part of air pollution or smog, poses a poterncal health threat.
This programme is looking at how Ozone is measured from space and on the ground by KNMI, and how this information is made public.
The transmission is made of an A-roll of six minutes with split audio (english) and a B-roll of seven minutes with clean international sound.

      OZONE HOLE 2004
Ozone is a gas that protects us from the sun's ultra-violet rays, but is also
      potentially damaging for us.
Keeping tabs on its production and distribution is important not only in the
Ozone layer but also so we can take precautions when it is closer to earth.
Learn all about it in: Space.
      02.00
Those hazy days of sea, sand and above all, the sun...is how most of us think
of the ideal holiday - a chance to forget about your worries and just soak it
      all in.
      2.20
But the very god that holidaymakers come to the beach to worship, could
unleash its full burning wrath without the protection of the Ozone layer.
And Ozone too has a split personality. It is damaging if we breath it in, but
when it also acts to blot out the worst of the sun's burning rays.
      02.40
""The good Ozone, the ozone that is protecting us, is sitting in a layer betwee
some 20 and 30 kilometres high altitude. The nice property about ozone is that
it can absorb the harmful ultraviolet radiation of the sun in that way
