Onlye a few days ago, on 14 January The ESA-built Huygens probe plunged into TitanÕs atmosphere and delivered the first ever direct sampling of TitanÕs atmospheric chemistry and the first photographs of its hidden surface. With this mission, ESA wrote history. Although it will be difficult to repeat such a success in 2005, the year to come promises to be rich in events and space missions.
For instance in the field of launcher-technology: European engineers have spared no effort to get the Ariane-5 ten tonnes launcher program back on track after the unsuccessful maiden flight in December 2002. The main cause for the mishap was the structure of the Vulcain-2 engine. The cooling system has since been improved and the thermal coating altered. The whole system of this launchers was thoroughly reviewed. Many ground-firings at the test bench in Vernon, France, showed satisfactory results. Ariane 5 Ten Tonnes will soon be ready as the EuropeÕs heaviest commercial launcher.
