      2008 has been a year of remarkable achievements for Europe in Space. Starting with the successful dockings of the Columbus laboratory and the ATV with the International Space Station, and followed by the launch of ESA's second Galileo satellite Giove-B and Rosetta's flyby asteroid Steins.

      7th of February 2008, the space shuttle Atlantis lifts off from Cape Canaveral carrying the European Columbus laboratory and marking a historic move for the European space agency. A few days later, Columbus docked with the International Space Station and astronauts Leopold Eyharts and Hans Schlegel flew in to complete the installation of the lab and conduct its first scientific experiments.
      Finally, after 20 years of preparation, Europe has its own place in space.

      And 2008 marked many other successes for the European Space Agency. Barely a month after Columbus, ""Jules Verne"", an unmanned automated transfer vehicle able to carry more than 7 tonnes of supplies, was launched by an Ariane 5 and performed Europe's first-ever automated docking in space.
      With the ATV, astronauts in the ISS can receive fresh food, water, scientific material and fuel in exchange for dirty laundry and rubbish.
