      This programme is a preview of the Manned Spaceflight missions of 2002 which will see the ESA astronauts De Winne and Vittori visiting the International Space Station.

      ESA's activities for Manned Spaceflight during 2002 will focus, as in previous years on the International Space Station and its utilisation. Since permanent human presence was established on the ISS in 2000 ESA's involvement has been growing rapidly.

      Two planned ISS missions by ESA astronauts in 2001 will undoubtedly become the highlights of the year.

      On 21 April, Italian Roberto Vitori will be lifting off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on a Russian Soyuz launcher to embark on a Taxi Flight to the ISS, accompanied by a Russian commander and a Billionaire space tourist from South Africa. This is a joint mission conducted by ESA, the Italian Space Agency and the Italian Air Force.
