A joint adventure

The ExoMars programme comprises two missions: the first – the Trace Gas Orbiter – launched in 2016 while the second, carrying the Rosalind Franklin rover, will target launch in 2028. Together they will seek signs of life on Mars.

Rosalind Franklin rover

In 2028, ESA will launch its most ambitious exploration mission yet in search for past and present signs of life on Mars.

The Rosalind Franklin rover can drill up to two metres below the surface, reaching samples shielded from radiation and extreme temperatures. Its onboard laboratory will analyse them on the spot, right on the martian surface.

Trace Gas Orbiter

Since 2018, the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter has been imaging Mars from orbit to understand its ancient past and potential habitability.

The spacecraft returns spectacular images of the surface and provides the best inventory of atmospheric gases, as well as mapping the planet’s surface for water-rich locations.
