The biannual International Fair of Innovation and Future Technologies SITEF will be held in Toulouse at the end of October. ESA will present ongoing and future space programmes and explain ESA initiatives to help European business.

ESA has organised several events with CNES, the French Space Agency, during the fair. These include:

  • a round-table discussion on ‘From Space Technology Transfer to start up’ highlighting initiatives for entrepreneurs through the European Space Incubators’ Network (ESINET)
  • a full-scale demonstration of DELTASS, the Disaster Emergency Logistic Telemedicine Advanced Satellite System.

The ESA initiative for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) will be presented and there will also be a demonstration on how EGNOS, Europe’s first venture into satellite navigation and the precursor of Galileo, Europe’s global navigation system, can be used for all sorts of navigation, including managing fleets of buses.

SITEF 2002 will take place at the Parc des Expositions in Toulouse, France, from 23 to 26 October. Since its creation in 1981, SITEF has become the event at which to present leading-edge technologies. For example, high-resolution television was first shown here in 1983, electronic telephone cards in 1985, the double-decker TGV high-speed train in 1993, the electronic wallet in 1998, and in 2000, the internet connection onboard the Airbus A340.

The ESA stand A22 in Hall 3 will showcase all ESA programmes, highlighting Galileo, missions launched in 2002 - Envisat, Meteosat Second Generation (MSG), Integral – as well as Mars Express to be launched in 2003.

Another stand C24 in Hall 3 will present ESA’s Technology Transfer Programme (TTP) with NODAL, the French TTP partner. Several applications of space technology now used in non-space fields will be on display such as space batteries for bikes, and space piezoelectric actuators which can be used in car injection to improve performance and reduce pollution.
