Space is big, complicated and expensive? Wrong, that was yesterday! Today satellites are small, agile and the data are affordable. The volume, frequency and variety of data available at your fingertips and their impact in many application areas are increasing exponentially. Join the SEF Master Class at the Swiss Economic Forum to learn more.

But how can companies use this Big Data from Space?

And what relevance does this have for companies and startups in Switzerland?

Get answers to these questions - and to how a little cubesat is the beginning of this revolution – at the SEF Masterclass with Renato Krpoun from the Swiss Space Office and Frank Salzgeber from the European Space Agency ESA, with the participation of startups Astrocast CEO and Co-founder Fabien Jordan, the SEF Awards Finalist 2019.

Two sessions of SEF Masterclass take place after the Swiss Economic Forum (SEF) program on the main stage on Friday afternoon 24 May 2019.

Learn how the importance of space as a place of using and transporting data and information is steadily increasing and how this is more and more affecting business activity.

By using concrete examples and interaction with the speakers, you can learn how to turn "Big Data from Space" into "Business from Space".

The speakers with lead these interactive workshops and deep into the current and relevant topics in small groups. Participants may also take a central role challenging their business ideas with the Big Data from space opportunity, maybe even completely revamp their business model.

Astrocast – Swiss satellite start-up disrupting the IoT market

First nanosatellite launch

Astrocast is a Swiss start-up company disrupting the satelitte IOT market. Founded in 2014 by developers of SwissCube, the first Swiss satellite, Astrocast`s team has now grown to over 35 people with experience in satellite design and manufacturing, satellite launch services, terminal design and IoT applications.

With the support of ESA Business Applications, Astrocast is developing a constellation of 64 nanosatellites in 8 orbital planes. The satellites are based on the 3U CubeSat format with most of the elements based on COTS components.

The in-house development expertise with nanosatellites allows for low development cost which together with low launching costs per nanosatellite provides a cost-effective solution. This cost advantage will be passed to the Astrocast customers in the form of low prices for annual data subscriptions.

ESA Business Applications and Space Solutions

ESA’s Business Applications programme helps European industry in non-space sectors to use space to enhance their products or services in a wide range of domains such as health, safety, environment, development, energy, aviation and transport.

The ESA Space Solutions network supports entrepreneurs and start-up to foster new companies and jobs in Europe based on space technologies and the use of satellite services.

This includes the 20 ESA Business Incubation Centres (ESA BICs) throughout Europe, in Switzerland with ESA BIC Switzerland, that co-funds projects and start-ups while offering technical and business support to companies that seek to deliver rapid innovation and raise private investment.

ESA BIC Network: the world´s largest ecosystem for space-related entrepreneurship

The 20 ESA Business Incubation Centres (ESA BICs) network is forming the largest ecosystem in the world for space-related entrepreneurship and has fostered over 700 start-ups throughout Europe.

Spread over more than 60 cities in 17 countries, more than 300 start-ups are currently under the two-years business incubation development booster programme with another 180 taking in yearly.

Today, there are ESA BICs in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands and UK, with more already in the planning.
