Proba-V's wide-swath Vegetation instrument observes on an 'always on' basis, with various data reduction methods employed in the process. Its reason of interest is limited to between 75°N and 58°S, with only Sun-lit images gathered, with a land/sea mask removing CCD rows containing only sea pixels. The data acquired is still large: additional data compression is essential to allow the small satellite to store the imagery gathered in its onboard memory, downlinking data once per orbit.
