ESA's Concurrent Design Facility develops concepts for future space missions

Systems involvement in Additive Layer Manufacturing
24 April 2014   Additive Layer Manufacturing (ALM) is one of the key technology roadmaps being developed in the frame of the clean space initiative at ESA. The benefits brought by this new manufacturing approach and respective extra design freedom can only be understood to their full extent if considered from a multidisciplinary system perspective.

The CDF and Clean Space Initiative utilized the abilities of a stagiare to carry out the initial study into ALM. Lena Schützle was on a six month internship from the Technical University of Munich and had been working in the ESA Concurrent Design Facility (CDF) in ESTEC learning about concurrent engineering and participating in CDF studies.

First Belgian Trainee Chosen for the CDF
12 November 2013   The first Belgian National Trainee, created by the Belgian National Trainee Program (NTP), has started work in the CDF. Johan Vennekens, a young graduate from the De Nayer Institute and the University of Leuven in Belgium arrived on the first of November for an initial one year placement as an assistant system engineer. Johan said that he was extremely pleased to win the chance to come to the CDF as his masters degree at Leuven had given him a real desire to gain experience in systems engineering and the chance to put this into practice at the conceptual stage of space mission design was like a dream come true for him.
