SMART-1 prallt auf dem Mond auf

| | | | | | Die einzelnen Bilder des Mosaiks stammen von AMIE an Bord von SMART-1 vom 19. August 2006, etwa zwei Wochen vor dem geplanten Aufpralldatum.
Der Streifen ist etwa 1800 Kilometer lang und reicht von 69° westlichen Längengrad und 11° nördlichen Breitengrad oben links bis 41° westlicher Längengrad bis 56° südlicher Breitengrad am unteren Ende rechts des Mosaiks. Die dargestellte Umgebung umfasst die Gegend, in der SMART-1 planmässig auf die Mondoberfläche aufschlagen soll.
Die Aufprallumgebung befindet sich im unteren Drittel, direkt über der kleinen Lücke in diesem Mosaik, südöstlich des kleinen Kraters Palmieri A in Richtung des Kraters Doppelmayer W. Eine Nahaufnahme dieser Region mit der eingezeichneten Aufschlagstelle steht unter "related Links" zur Verfügung.
Die Aufnahmen wurden während zwei aufeinander folgenden Umlaufbahnen (2820 & 2821) aus einer Höhe zwischen 900 Kilometern (niedrigste Stelle des Mosaiks) und 3000 km (höchster Punkt der Aufnahme) gemacht, woraus zwei aneinander grenzende Streifen entstanden. Die Sequenzen wurden aufgenommen, nachdem SMART-1 den lunaren Südpol überflogen hat und sich am äußeren Rand seiner Umlaufbahn in Richtung Apolune befand. Daher verlaufen die Bilder aufeinanderfolgend von Süd nach Nord.
Am 19. August, dem Datum der Aufnahme, flog die Mondsonde nicht direkt über der dargestellten Umgebung. Daher beobachtete die Kamera die Mondoberfläche unter einem Winkel, was zu der Krümmung des Mosaiks führte.
