Mike Heddes

I was an Artificial Intelligence stagiaire in the Advanced Concepts Team (ACT) from February until September 2019. I started two projects throughout my internship: the dCGP web application and optimize.esa.int.

First, I made an interactive web application that provides an accessible version of dCGP, a genetic programming library created by the ACT. The goal of this project is to lower the barrier of entry for people who are interested in dCGP. To accomplish this it provides a playground to experiment and get familiar with dCGP. The underlying idea is that dCGP will move towards a product (software tool) helpful for engineering rather than an academic experiment. The project is online at esa.github.io/dcgp-web.

Secondly, I made an online competition platform where people can submit their solutions for space-related single- and multi-objective optimization problems. The ACT used to maintain a database of trajectory optimization problems called GTOP, this new platform is intended to renew and extend its purpose. Unlike GTOP, this new platform is not limited to trajectory optimization problems, it supports any type of optimization problem. The competition platform is called League of Extraordinary Optimizations also referred to as optimize.esa.int.

During my internship, in June 2019, I graduated from the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences where I majored in Mechanical Engineering. In my spare time, I enjoy listening to and making music. Besides that, I work on projects which are mostly programming, design or engineering related. More information on my music or personal projects can be found on my website: mikeheddes.nl.
