Advanced Concepts Team - Distributed Computing (ACT-DC)

A distributed computing environment has been developed which uses the idle time of the ESA computers. The system is capable of dealing with a wide range of computationally hard problems.

Development of a distributed computing environment utilizing the idle-time of the user desktop computers (at the moment, on the local network) was an activity in the ACT 'Distributed Computing' area.

The novelty of our ACT Distributed Computing Environment is that - due to the highly modular development and readily available data storage classes - the system is capable of dealing with a wide range of computationally hard problems, including single-, and multi-objective global optimization, constraint satisfaction, numerical integration, satellite data processing, computational fluid dynamics, etc.
