Edward Tomanek-Volynets

I am a visiting researcher at the Advanced Concepts Team, working on mission analysis and design.

I graduated from the University of Glasgow in 2023 with a MEng degree in aeronautical engineering. Since then, I have been pursuing a PhD (with Matteo Ceriotti and Colin McInnes) at the University of Glasgow, with the aim of improving the efficiency of time-consuming problems associated with space mission design. My research at ACT centres around the Keplerian Travelling Salesperson Problem (KTSP) - a formalisation of the combinatorial problem underlying multi-target mission design. Current solution methods are often prohibitively time-consuming - the goal of my work is to produce a machine learning approach, where an agent could be trained to generate near-optimal solutions almost instantaneously.

My broader research interests lie in trajectory optimisation for low-thrust spacecraft and mission planning problems (such as the KTSP) in general. Aside from my technical work, I am involved in teaching a number of undergraduate engineering courses at the University of Glasgow, and enjoy listening to music and playing the piano.
