Martin Moureau

Hello! I’m Martin Moureau and I joined ESA’s Advanced Concepts Team as an intern in April 2025 to develop distributed quantum sensing protocols for future space missions.
I earned a B.Sc. in Physics from EPFL, completing my final year on exchange at the Université de Montréal, where I carried out my first research project on the excitonic behaviour of crystals via photoluminescence. Back in Lausanne I enrolled in EPFL’s specialised M.Sc. in Quantum Science and Engineering, focusing mainly on quantum information theory, quantum error correction codes and open quantum systems. During my master’s I devised techniques for estimating the Liouvillian gap in high dimensional dissipative systems within the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics of Nanosystems under Prof. Vincenzo Savona, and in the SMILS group led by Prof. Nicolas Macris I designed cat state-based quantum circuits that contributed to proving conjectures in quantum computing complexity.
I was drawn to quantum science by the powerful advantages these theories offer. The next generation technologies that will arise from it, such as in computing, sensing, and communications, will have direct applications while also providing tools to explore the frontiers of physics beyond the Standard Model. The promise of these quantum advantages, and their potential to transform both practical applications and our understanding of the universe, is what inspires my work in this field.
Beyond research you will usually find me in the mountains: hiking and trail running in summer, or freeride and ski touring when the snow arrives. I also compete in triathlons, with a particular passion for the cycling leg.
