Paolo Giaretta

I'm an intern in Mission Analysis and Artificial Intelligence in the Advanced Concepts Team.

I am currently a final-year Master's student at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Mechanical Engineering and Data Science. I completed my Bachelor's in Aerospace Engineering at Politecnico di Milano, and next semester I will finish my studies at MIT.

During my brief three-month experience here, I worked on developing reinforcement learning algorithms for solar sailing to the outer solar system under the supervision of Dario Izzo and Harry Holt. I am quite interested in ways to enhance standard trajectory design and optimization techniques with recent developments in machine learning for efficient and reliable control.

My interests have always been quite interdisciplinary and broad in STEM, but have over time converged towards machine learning and its applications to engineering. Some of my previous interests have been GNNs for aerodynamics, discrete diffusion language models, rocket propulsion, and organic chemistry. I also have a strong passion for aviation, brain teasers, and playing guitar.
