Sofia Caponigri
Ciao! I'm Sofia, and I've joined the Advanced Concepts Team in July 2026 as a visiting student to work on my master thesis, which focuses on the modelling and design of a variable stiffness joint for robotic applications.
I obtained my bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Cagliari (grazie prof. Pani), and am currently completing my master's degree in Bionic Engineering with a specialization in Biorobotics, which is jointly held by the University of Pisa, Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies and the IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca.
My academic carreer has been driven by my desire to explore the world of biomimicry and to contribute to making the world a more accessible place for people with disabilities. During this past year, I joined the Soft Mechatronics for Biorobotics laboratory, where I collaborated on the Share-CP project by fabricating a sensorized elastomeric handle for detecting grasping force in children with cerebral palsy and am currently working on my thesis.
When I'm not studying, I love painting and adding to my ever-growing stash of materials and tools for random hobbies I pick up. I also love spending time with my friends and family, hiking, and finding beauty in the weeds that sprout from pavements.
