Sofia Sauro

Hi! I am Sofia and I joined the Advanced Concepts Team in September 2025 as ESA Graduate Trainee in Non-equilibrium Thermodynamics. I hold a Master’s degree in Physics from the University of Amsterdam (joint degree with Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), and previous to that I obtained a Bachelor’s degree also in Physics from the University of Trento.

I am interested in the application of theoretical frameworks from mathematics and physics to better understand complex systems, in particular living systems. My master thesis focused on an information-theoretic approach to chemical sensing in bacterial chemotaxis, and I carried out an internship at LMU Munich in computational neuroscience studying spatial navigation for a system of head-direction cells.

Given that I spend most of my work time indoor, I love being outside in my free time, practising athletics, hiking on weekends (even though the flatness of the Netherlands poses a real challenge to this) and getting lost in the streets of the city.
