Thore Gerlach

I'm a Research Fellow in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics at ESA's Advanced Concepts Team (ACT).

Before joining this team, I obtained my PhD in Quantum Machine Learning at the University of Bonn in 2025, and hold Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science.

My research focuses on resource-aware machine learning, with an emphasis on data scarcity, low energy consumption, and stringent latency constraints. I study energy-based learning with quantum computers as a path toward improved sample efficiency, and investigate differentiable logic neural networks (LNNs) that enable fast, energy-efficient inference for space applications. More recently, I am interested in making LNNs robust to hardware-level errors, such as radiation-induced faults in space environments.

In my free time, you’ll usually find me in the mountains — skiing, road biking, hiking or climbing.

My publications can be found on Google Scholar. Feel free to contact me via mail tni.ase@hcalreg.eroht or connect on LinkedIn.
