From 28 November to 1 December, the Satellite Communication Systems Training Course took place at the ESA Education Training and Learning Facility in ESEC-Galaxia, Belgium. This first pilot edition, developed in collaboration with ESA’s Directorate of Connectivity and Secure Communications, brought together 30 passionate Master and Ph.D. students from 13 different nationalities.

Students started with a glimpse into what systems engineering is, delved into some link budget calculations, and with the help of a microphone and a very creative trainer, they were surprised with a demonstration of how signals are modulated through space!

Throughout the week, topics like the ground segment, antennas, operations, security and applications, as well as the future of satellite communications were covered by ESA experts. Not only students explored the technical side, but also discovered the legal and business aspects of communication satellites, which are equally as important.

“As a person with interest and previous knowledge in satellite communications, I really enjoyed participating in this training course. It helped me to get deeper insight into the engineering of satellite communication systems from a basic system engineering point of view to more complex concepts like multibeam techniques and quantum cryptography. Also, other associated, less-technical topics like telecommunication law and economics were presented, which really helped me to explore this field from totally different and for me previously unknown angles” said a student from Brno University of Technology.

The course didn’t limit itself to lectures, but also included exciting visits. The students had a tour of the ESEC-Redu in Belgium. They learned about the history of the site, about what their ground segment-related activities entail and got a tour of the Mission Control Room, where the Proba missions are operated. Soon afterward, students joined a virtual visit to the ESA 5G/6G Hub at ECSAT, in the United Kingdom, where they were given a brief look into these next-generation facilities.

“I'm grateful for this unique, life-changing opportunity where expectations were not just met but exceeded. Surrounded by intelligence and exceptional knowledge in the space field, I expanded my awareness and understanding of the future vision for the space industry. I gained extensive knowledge in SatCom and beyond”, commented a student from Vilnius Gediminas Technical University in Lithuania. “The people I met created a magnificent atmosphere by engaging in inspiring and impactful conversations. This experience has broadened my thinking, shaping my future in ways I never expected.” the student continued.

Last but not least, the course was complemented with some fun activities in the evenings. Through Virtual Reality goggles, the students stood on a platform in orbit, and could control different communication satellites with their hands. This enriching experience allowed them to discover SatComs from a different perspective, literally and figuratively!

“The ESA Satellite Communication Systems Training Course was an inspiring experience. I am grateful to have been part of this exciting week. Learning directly from experts, I feel that I have gained a broad but complete understanding of the satcom field. It felt inspiring to be surrounded by motivated people with similar enthusiasm about space, both experts and fellow participants.” commented a student from the Eindhoven University of Technology. “The discussions I had throughout the week have inspired and motivated me to continue working in this direction. In addition to the educational aspect, I truly enjoyed the wonderful time I had networking and socializing with both the experts and peers from all over Europe. I am certain that having been part of this experience will have an important impact on my future life.” the student continued.

After the enormous success of the first edition, we are looking forward to welcome more students on a next edition!
