Bergsträsser Space Days 19-21 February

18 February 2009
Local astronomy and other community groups located near ESA's Darmstadt establishment will present the second annual 'Bergsträsse Space Days' this week, aimed at emphasising space science in the classroom. Senior managers from ESA will speak at the grand opening and everyone's invited.

Some twenty local clubs, associations, schools and community groups will take part in the 2nd annual Bergstrasse Space Days, an event targeting students, youth and people of all ages that aims to boost the connection between space, science, education and the local region.

The grand opening on Thursday, 19 February, will include a presentation by Dr Frank Danesy, Head of Human Resources at ESOC, the European Space Operations Centre located in Darmstadt.

On Friday, 20 February, ESA's Markus Landgraf, a scientists working at ESOC's Mission Analysis Office, will host a showing of the new ESA space show, "Sofie's Voyage: A Discovery of the Universe" ("Sofie's Reise: eine Entdeckung des Weltalls").

The three-day programme includes presentations, media shows, art and project exhibitions and star gazing opportunities, weather permitting.

The BSD event is organised by the Hessen branch of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Schulastronomie (German Association for School Astronomy) together with the Lions Club of Seeheim-Jugenheim and the Schuldorf Bergstrasse. The event will take place at the Schuldorf, located in the village of Seeheim-Jugenheim, south of Darmstadt.

Participating exhibitors include ESA and a variety of astronomy clubs, media and scientific organisations. The event is an official project of the International Year of Astronomy IYA 2009.
