On 8 July, at the Italian space agency (ASI) headquarters, distinguished guests gathered for a unique occasion honouring the enduring partnership between Italy and the European Space Agency. This event marked a significant milestone in Europe’s journey among the stars, with ASI proudly joining the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of ESA.

Set against the elegant backdrop of the ASI gardens and the Terrazza Pistoletto, the evening opened with a welcome aperitif followed by a curated programme of blending music, institutional speeches and multimedia experiences.

Renowned journalist Safiria Leccese guided the evening, which featured captivating performance by the Symphony Orchestra of the Teatro Comunale Francesco Paolo Tosti of Ortona, opening with the evocative piece ‘The Dancer in the Enchanted Sphere’.

The event was addressed by: ASI President Teodoro Valente, Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso, ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher and ESA Director of Earth Observation (and Head of ESRIN) Simonetta Cheli. Together they highlighted the strategic and cultural significance of Italy’s contributions to space exploration.

A visual journey through past and present ESA/Italy collaborations followed, celebrating shared achievements and future ambitions. The evening concluded with the second musical performance, ‘The Dance of the Luminous Butterflies’, set amidst an enchanting display of laser lights and video mapping, offering a fitting tribute to the innovation, creativity and unity that define European space cooperation.
