To achieve its mission of shaping the development of Europe’s space capability, ESA relies on a matrix management structure. This ensures that specialised expertise and cutting-edge infrastructure are seamlessly shared across all ongoing programmes and missions.

Each Directorate is headed by a Director who reports directly to the Director General. These business units manage complex programme life cycles—from initial scientific research and engineering design to launch, orbit insertion, and long-term data exploitation.

Operational activities are distributed across ESA’s establishments. This geographical distribution fosters a robust and collaborative European space ecosystem and collaborative European space ecosystem.
