ESA’s participation in the International Space Station
ESA, supported by PricewaterhouseCoopers, has completed a study to assess the socio-economic impact of its participation in the International Space Station (ISS) programme with respect to ISS Development, ISS Exploitation and Utilisation (ELIPS).
The report provides a global and European perspective, within the economies and industries of each ESA Member State.

The study also evaluated the potential impacts of the participation of ESA in an extension to the ISS exploitation and utilisation programme until 2024.
Looking beyond the cost of the programme, the impact of ESA’s participation was evaluated from a much wider perspective.
The study examined:
- quantitative impacts of the defined programmes;
- qualitative impacts;
- definition of alternative scenarios and wider effects;
- overall impacts (taking into account the above);
- projection of the overall estimated impacts in the case of ESA joining the ISS exploitation and utilisation programme until 2024.
