Understanding the standard terms used within the European space community has just become easier using the free ECSS e-Glossary app

Developed within the frame of ESA Corporate Knowledge Management activities, the ECSS eGlossary app is now available for download from the iOS and Android store and the ECSS e-Glossary plugin for MS Word is available here from the Microsoft Appstore.

For download and installation on corporate-owned devices, the ability to install these is dependent upon your individual organisation's permissions and firewalls placed on that device.

The European Cooperation for Space Standardization or ECSS, established in 1993, provides a coherent, single set of user-friendly standards for use in all European space activities.

The ultimate goal of building such a standardisation system, at European level, is to minimise life-cycle cost, and improve the quality, functional integrity, and compatibility of all elements of a space project. This goal is achieved by applying common standards for project management and for the development and testing of hardware and software. More about how ESA supports the ECSS is explained here.

In the ECSS e-Glossary app you can search for terms used in the ECSS standards, find terms by branch, discipline or abbreviations and then filter your search results.

When logged in to the app, you can also bookmark terms in a ‘Favourites’ tab so you can easily find them again at another time.

For each term, the app provides a Definition, the ECSS Standard in which the term is used such as ECSS-E-ST-60-20C Rev.1, additional Notes and Relations for related terms.

A web-based version of the glossary can also be found on the ECSS website at https://ecss.nl/home/glossary/

ESA regularly provides training for SMEs on ECSS standards. For further information on these courses, visit the SME Training page. The next set of ECSS courses will be livestreamed from 14–16 October.
