The first generation of MetOp satellites had greatest impact on the accuracy of weather forecasts. Building on this remarkable legacy, MetOp-SG further enhances numerical weather prediction and climate analysis by delivering even better measurement accuracy, resolution and dynamic range, and also introduces new measurements with a number of novel sensors.

The MetOp-SG mission is designed to provide operational observations and measurements from polar orbit for weather forecasting and climate monitoring.

Importantly, its data also serve a wide range of applications, including atmospheric chemistry, short-term weather forecasting in high latitudes, oceanography, hydrology, and land monitoring.

This advancement significantly enhances nowcasting and very short-range weather forecasting, particularly in high-latitude regions where geostationary satellite coverage is limited.

MetOp-SG ensures the continuous delivery of essential meteorological data through a series of three successive or overlapping satellite pairs, guaranteeing an uninterrupted data stream for more than 20 years.
