Cayenne The capital of French Guiana.

CSG Centre Spatial Guyanais

DHSS Data Handling Sub-System The Data Handling Subsystem (DHSS) provides all telemetry acquisition and processing, and forwards telemetry to the Telemetry, Tracking and Command subsystem (TTC) for transmission to Earth. It consists of three physical units, the Control Data Management Unit and two Remote Terminal Units (RTUs). Commands and acquisition are sent out from the CDMU to the different subsystems of the satellite via the RTUs, or via the SEVIRI Functional Control Unit (FCU) - The EPS tests are still in progress. Today the Active Thermal Control performance test is run. Next in line is the Data Handling Sub-System (DHSS) with the Central Data Management Unit (CDMU) reset and safe mode tests

EPS Electrical Power Subsystem. The EPS is formed from five separate elements: a solar-array photovoltaic energy source; two nickel-cadmium batteries; a Power Control Unit (PCU); a Power Distribution Unit (PDU), and; a Pyrotechnic Release Unit (PRU).

GERB Geostationary Earth Radiation Budget. This sensor will allow accurate measurements of the Earth’s radiation budget, the energy source for the climate system.

MSG Meteosat Second Generation. Soon after developing the first European meteorological satellite, Meteosat, in the 1970s, ESA initiated studies to improve related space technology. In the early 1990s, ESA and EUMETSAT established a cooperative programme, Meteosat Second Generation, to continue and enhance the Meteosat mission.

RTU Remote Terminal Units. Part of the satellite’s Data Handling Sub-System (see DHSS).

S1 The building in Kourou where the MSG satellite will arrive after its transport from Europe and where it will remain for the first eight weeks of the launch campaign for health, functional and performance checks.

SEVIRI The Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infra-Red Imager is the satellite’s main instrument. Earth images are obtained by a bi-dimensional Earth scan, combining the satellite spin and the scan mirror rotation – a rapid scan from east to west, thanks to the satellite’s rotation around its spin axes (at 100 rpm), and a slow scan from south to north with the scanning mechanism, which rotates the scan mirror in 125.8 µrad steps.

TT&C Telemetry, Tracking and Command subsystem

UPS Unified Propulsion System. The UPS is the spacecraft’s propulsion system. Its components include: two Liquid Apogee Motors (LAM): six Reaction Control Thrusters (RCT), four propellant tanks, two latch valves, three pressure transducers, and four gauging sensors.
