The piezo foil technique allows for the design of extremely thin and flexible sensors and actuators that can also be mounted on curved surfaces and are applicable for almost all dynamical measurement ranges. Originally developed to improve the tactile sensitivity of orbital robots used to assemble the International Space Station, today it can improve safety on our roads. For example, by attaching it to a car bumper, the course of car accidents can be predicted, leading to the activation of passenger and vehicle safety systems such as airbags or seat belt tighteners.
