Space activities continue to grow at a remarkable pace. In 2025, more than 300 launches took place with over 4.000 new payloads put into orbit. Large constellations and the growing use of rideshare missions mean more satellites are being deployed per launch, with single-payload missions becoming rarer.
At the same time, the debris population also continues to expand faster, with both fragmentation debris and defunct payloads contributing significantly.
A different trend is the increasing number of objects in orbit with an unidentified classification, reflecting a growing gap between detected and catalogued (i.e. detected of known origin) fragments. Indeed, as technologies improve, we can observe more objects but many of these detectable objects cannot yet be linked to a specific source or break-up event. This is highlighting the increasing complexity of the space environment and the need for improved monitoring and space traffic management capabilities to be able to avoid collisions and fragmentations.
