ESA’s billion-star surveyor, Gaia, is on its launch pad at Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana.

It is currently scheduled for launch at 09:12 GMT on Thursday 19th December 2013 on board the legendary Soyuz  rocket  operated by Arianespace.

During the next 5 years Gaia will map the stars with unprecedented precision,  making the largest, most precise three-dimensional map of the Milky Way Galaxy by surveying more than a billion stars and determining their precise positions in space and their motions through it.

Gaia will orbit around the Sun, at a distance of 1.5 million km beyond Earth’s orbit, scanning the sky.

Gaia’s main goal is to produce a catalogue that will become the reference for astronomers in their various astronomical researches.

This feed comprises latest images from Kourou of Gaia and Soyuz launch campaign at the Centre Spatial Guyanais with interviews of ESA' s Gaia mission management in several languages.

These videos will also be posted on ESA TV FTP server
