Climate Detectives School Award 2019-2020
Due to the evolution of the corona virus situation in Europe, and in line with the recommendations of ESA's Director General on travel restrictions for health and safety reasons, the ESA Education Office has decided to cancel the Climate Detectives School Award event, planned to take place in ESA's ESRIN establishment (Frascati, Italy) on 18 June 2020. All participating teams will be duly informed.
ESA is pleased to invite all Climate Detectives school teams to apply for the Climate Detectives School Award 2019-2020! The winning teams will visit the ‘Phi-Experience’ at ESA’s Earth observation site ESRIN, in Italy, and will have the opportunity to meet EO experts.
How to apply?
If you are a registered Climate Detectives team and want to participate in the Climate Detectives School Award 2019-2020, you will have to share the results of your investigation (summary; main results; actions to help lessen the problem) by 13 May 2020. Teams must also share a video (or other multimedia presentation) of maximum 3 minutes to introduce themselves and their project.
Applications must be submitted in English making use of the projects sharing platform.
Teams have from 16 April 2020 to 13 May 2020 to share their results and apply for the Award.
Important dates
13 May 2020: Last day for Climate Detectives teams to share their results and to apply to the Climate Detectives School Award 2019-2020.
30 May 2020: The best projects are announced.
18 June 2020: Four winning teams visit the ‘Phi-Experience’ at ESA’s Earth observation site ESRIN, in Italy and present their projects (in English).
Rules for participation
- Only teams who are participating in the Climate Detectives project are eligible to apply for the Climate Detectives School Award*.
- Applications must be submitted in English making use of the projects sharing platform.
- Maximum 6 student team members can participate in the visit to ESRIN. Students that participated in the LPS2019 Climate Detectives School Award event are not eligible to visit ESRIN.
- At least one teacher must accompany the team. Maximum two teachers can join.
*As guest competitors, teams from Malta are eligible as highly commended teams but not as winning teams.
Sponsorship and costs
ESA will book and sponsor the cost of hotel rooms (maximum 2 nights). The winning teams should arrange their own travel to the hotel.
Travel expenses will be covered by ESA up to a maximum of 200€ per team member. These expenses will be reimbursed after the event, on production of valid, original receipts.
ESA will arrange and sponsor necessary local transport from the hotel to ESRIN.
Costs for meals are covered for breakfast, lunch and dinner during the event.
Teams are responsible for arranging their own passports, visas, and any additional insurance required.
Further practical details will be communicated directly to the winning teams.

Dedicated to ESA’s Earth-observing activities, ESA-ESRIN is the European centre of excellence for exploitation of Earth observation missions.
ESRIN hosts the Earth observation multimedia centre, comprising a Control Room for Earth Observation Payloads (CREOP), an Earth data visualisation experience (Phi- Experience), and a long-term data preservation exhibit area (Heritage Missions Walkthrough).
